DRINKING WATER QUALITY ASSESMENT IN IBADAN CITY, OYO STATE, SOUTHWESTERN NIGERIA

Abstract



Water quality is the term used to express the suitability of water to sustain various uses or processes. Any particular use of water have certain requirements for the physical, chemical or biological characteristics. Drinking water quality assessment was carried out in Ibadan southwestern Nigeria covering the whole eleven local governments within the city. The study area falls within latitude 70 191 1811 and 70 191 1811 and longitude 30 471 5011 and 40 01 2211. The research was done by administering questionnaires to two hundred and ninety-eight people whom responses were treated and analyzed using excel work sheet module to plot the responses into charts. The results of the responses of the people in Ibadan metropolis have shown that majority of the residents source their drinking water from borehole and sachet water. Meanwhile, sachet/bottled water are also sourced from borehole. These in combination shows that about 71% of people of Ibadan sourced their drinking water from borehole. Although, vast majority number of the people of the study area do nothing (either boiling or chlorination) to improve their water quality. This is of their opinion that water of highest quality is found in borehole and they are satisfied with the water source. 37.9% of the people believed that the government should be responsible for water quality standard . 27.8% of the people believed in their opinion that they should be responsible for their water quality. 16.1% of the people believed that water suppliers should be responsible for water quality, 15.1% of the people believed that the society at large should be responsible for the water quality, and 3% believed municipality should be responsible. Conclusively, more awareness or sensitization must be done on water quality and menace of waterborne diseases because almost 50% of the people in Ibadan do nothing to improve their water quality because of their water source(borehole) forgetting that borehole can also be contaminated by people or natural causes.

Water is a rare source which could not be found everywhere, it is regarded as life and very useful to all human endeavors. Efforts on accessing the quality of drinking water in Ibadan metropolis has attracted lesser attention by people in the city.
