Success story



For more than ten years Water Initiatives Nigeria has been working to implement WASH programs in primary and secondary schools and communities Nigeria. Our success to date includes the completion of WASH and community sanitation projects in rural and urban communities across Nigeria that have brought life-changing programs to large number of communities through extensive community involvement and engagement, the establishment of school-based WASH programs and post-implementation maintenance.



Strategies of action



  • Through self-assisted water projects i.e. deep wells, boreholes, rainwater harvesting and building of water networks.
  • Data collection and information dissemination on water management and consumption
  • Identification of water and proper sanitation needs.
  • Awareness campaign and public education to ensure behavioral change by all.
  • Training of appropriate personnel in maintenance and implementation of existing water project in local communities.
  • Development and execution of research proposals on water and sanitation and environmental related issues..
  • Collaboration with governmental, non-governmental, community based organizations, private enterprises, international organizations etc. to formulate and implement good water projects and policies.
  • Capacity building-training the youths in concept of safe drinking water and appropriate sanitation. ​


Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in schools



Safe and adequate water supply and sanitation in schools are pre-requisites for the right to basic education for school children (Mooijman 2012). The provision of adequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities in schools has been linked to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on universal primary education, gender equality and child mortality, and more recently to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and in particular Goal 6 on clean water and sanitation by 2030.



In actualizing the aim of water for all in Nigeria, it behooves on every tier of government, the private sector, as well as the NGOs, to play leading roles in that direction.
