our mission

Our mission is to help in providing access to safe drinking water and appropriate sanitation to rural and urban communities in Nigeria. We also help to conserve the environment by helping people to conserve water, energy, reduce waste, pollution, carbon dioxide emission and risk and disaster reduction. We help local communities in developing their capacities to tackle water and sanitation challenges. We have a range of advice and supporting services that are delivered at local level which can provide practical solutions to water and environmental issues with enthusiasm and passion to meet the millennium development goals

Our goals

The goal of the organization is to provide access to safe drinking water and appropriate sanitation for people in both rural and urban centers.

Water Initiatives Nigeria is dedicated to the provision of access to safe drinking water and appropriate sanitation, which we believe, will strengthen sustainable future and lead towards social and economic improvements of the social communities at national level.

In order to achieve this, Water Initiatives Nigeria is committed to work with different range of stakeholders in order to foster cooperation and joint work for achieving sustainable future through eradication of water borne diseases associated with lack of safe drinking water and appropriate sanitation.

water is the driving force in nature. its the lifeblood of humanity, our nations, our economies and our well-being.

one good action repeated a million times creates global change !!!

water plays an important role in our world. it is the center piece of all life.

World Water Day is Observed Annually on March 22 to Raise Awareness About the Vital Importance of Water to Safeguarding Human Security and Maintaining the Health of the Planet’s Ecosystems. The theme of World Water Day 2025 is ‘Glacier Preservation’. Glaciers are critical to life – their meltwater is essential for drinking water, agriculture, industry, clean energy production and healthy ecosystems. Rapidly melting glaciers are causing uncertainty to water flows, with profound impacts on people and the planet. Global reductions in carbon emissions and local strategies to adapt to shrinking glaciers are essential.

the food we eat,the air we breathe, the water we drink and the climate that makes our planet habitable all come from nature.

It’s time to wake up. To take notice. To raise our voices. It’s time to build back better for People and Planet.

Whoever you are, wherever you are, sanitation is your human right. And yet, today, 4.2 billion people live without safely managed sanitation.

Every being on the planet must defecate. Every country, however, deals with its excrement in a different way. The most vulnerable areas of the planet, its "developing countries", lack adequate santitation and water treatment systems. This problem means that waste affects their resources without it having been properly treated, leading to the contamination of their rivers and seas, and spreading diseases, some of them fatal.

We live on a Blue Planet. A massive 70% of the Earth’s surface is water, yet just 5% of the ocean is protected from damaging human activities.

Every individual can make a difference by reducing single plastic use, recycling, and disposing of our trash properly.

Ensuring healthy lives and promoting the wellbeinG

Ensuring healthy lives and promoting the wellbeing for all at all ages is essential to sustainable development. Significant strides have been made in increasing life expectancy and reducing some of the common killers associated with child and maternal mortality. Major progress has been made on increasing access to clean water and sanitation, reducing malaria, tuberculosis, polio and the spread of HIV/AIDS. However, many more efforts are needed to fully eradicate a wide range of diseases and address many different persistent and emerging health issues

our work

Our work is divided into four programmes Water and Sanitation (WASH), education and capacity building, public advocacy, environmental conservation and climate change. We consider cooperation as necessary tool for development processes. Therefore, we maintain partnerships with different stakeholders, being aware of the importance of every single pillar: local communities, authorities, other organizations and individuals at national and international level. For example, we are one of the 3 host institutions for Project WET of the Water Education Foundation, USA in Nigeria taking water education to children and adults towards social and economic improvements. Our organization is also part of the Global Water Partnership (GWP) in Nigeria.

who we are

Water Initiatives Nigeria was founded in 2009 as a non-governmental, non-profit and non-political organization. Groundwater development

Due to complex and erratic nature of groundwater occurrences in crystalline basement terrains, groundwater development in form of boreholes/wells without the necessary pre-drilling hydrogeological investigations usually results in failure. Therefore, there is the need for adequate characterization of aquifers and delineation of groundwater potential zones in such crystalline basement setting. Water Initiatives Nigeria provides free consultation services to the society.

our team

Our mission is about people and our work is for people. And the most important resource we have to succeed at our mission is the incredible people who work for us and with us. We want to thank all the volunteers, staff, board, field partners, funding partners, donors, and strategic partners for their dedication, tenacity, and selflessness in helping us work to solve the world's water crisis

rainwater harvesting

Rainwater harvesting is one of the easiest ways to save Earth’s resources of drinking water.Rainwater can be collected and reused with just a tank, a filter and a pump.Using a rainwater tank will furthermore be part of the solutions to prevent flooding and destruction of buildings, when the first part of a heavy rainfall is absorbed in the rainwater tank, which prevents the sewers from being overflooded and thus reducing flooding.

Water and sanitation projects for schools

Many schools in Nigeria lack safe, private toilets and hand-washing facilities. This affects enrolment and performance, particularly in the case of girls. The impact of water, hygiene and sanitation falls disproportionately on women and girls, the main carriers of waters.

environmental conservation

A healthy environment plays a key role in meeting many of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. With a little over 10 years left to meet the target date of 2030, the world will need to pick up the pace and put greater efforts in finding better solutions to pollution, climate change and biodiversity loss in order to truly transform societies and economies. Locally in Nigeria, Water Initiatives Nigeria is at the forefront of ensuring a healthy environment.
